See Clearly and Feel Better: Tips for Caring for Your Eyes in the Digital Age
As an InformationTechnology Student, I spend most of my time using my laptop or mobile with various tasks and answering their queries. Recently, I started experiencing discomfort in my eyes after extended periods of screen time. At first, I ignored the symptoms and continued working, but the discomfort persisted, and I realized that I needed to take better care of my eyes.
I decided to visit an eye doctor to get my eyes checked. The doctor told me that I was suffering from computer vision syndrome and dry eye, a condition that results from prolonged screen use. He recommended some tips for maintaining good eye health, which I would like to share with you.
Firstly, he advised me to follow the 20-20-20 rule, which involves taking a break every 20 minutes and looking away from the screen at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This simple exercise helps to relax the eye muscles and reduce eye strain caused by prolonged screen use.
Secondly, the doctor emphasized the importance of staying hydrated. He recommended drinking at least eight glasses of water a day to keep my body and eyes hydrated. This would help prevent dry eyes, a common symptom of computer vision syndrome.
Thirdly, the doctor advised me to wear blue light glasses, which are specially designed to block blue light emitted by digital devices such as laptops and smartphones. Blue light can cause eye strain, headaches, and disrupt sleep patterns. Wearing blue light glasses can help reduce the harmful effects of blue light on your eyes.
Additionally, one of my mentors (H. S. Rai sir) advised me to use a large font size when working on the computer to reduce eye strain and make it easier to read the text. Use multiple users in your computer with specific requirements with different preferences. Using a font size of at least 16 points for body text, along with a clear, easy-to-read font style such as Arial or Helvetica, can make a significant difference in the readability of text on the screen.
Another important aspect of eye health is getting enough rest and relaxation for your eyes. When your eyes are closed, you can use a screen reader to listen to content in that time your eyes are able to rest and recover from the strain of daily use. It’s important to get enough sleep each night to allow your eyes to rest and regenerate, and to take short breaks throughout the day to rest your eyes.
In addition to rest, there are some exercises you can do to help improve the health of your eyes. One such exercise is palming, which involves gently covering your closed eyes with your palms for several minutes at a time. This exercise can help to reduce eye strain and improve circulation to the eyes.
Another exercise is eye yoga, which involves moving your eyes in various directions while focusing on different points. This exercise can help to strengthen the muscles around your eyes and improve their flexibility.
Finally, the doctor cautioned me against using a laptop in low light conditions. Using a laptop in a poorly lit environment can cause eye strain as your eyes work harder to adjust to the screen's brightness. He recommended using my laptop in a well-lit room or with proper lighting.
In conclusion, my visit to the eye doctor taught me the importance of taking care of my eyes, especially as a Developer who spends a lot of time in front of a screen. I learned that following the 20-20-20 rule, staying hydrated, wearing blue light glasses, eye exercises and using my laptop in a well-lit environment can help prevent eye problems such as computer vision syndrome. I hope that sharing my experience will encourage you to take better care of your eyes and prevent eye problems caused by prolonged screen use.
